It is with a heavy heart that I pass on the news of the death of Tony Broughton. I first met him in 1996 on the Napoleon Series and we quickly became close friends. He was generous with his time and a willing supporter of my and my other people's research. He had the largest Napoleonic Library that I know ofwhich combined with thousands of prints and paintings, he established a reputation for being to able answer almost any question about Napoleon's Army.
What is not well known is that he was one of the driving forces for the expansion of the Napoleon Series. In 1997, Fons Libert asked for volunteers to help with the website. He, along with Tom Holmberg and myself, joined the team and within a year Fons turned the website over to us. Other people helped out over the years, but it was primarily Tony, Tom, and I who ran it for 22 years, until the Waterloo Association took over its stewardship in 2020. Tony provided unwavering support throughout those years. His primary job was as the Research Editor. What many people don't know is that the Napoleon Series received many emails from students, scholars, and people with a general interest in the Era, asking for assistance. Tony answered the vast majority of these questions. In addition to helping run the website, he was an accomplished historian and wrote many articles for the Series. Furthermore, he made available his vast library of images for use on the Series and by scholars.
Tony will be missed and his quiet support for many years will be a void that will be impossible to fill.
Rest in Peace Tony.
Bob
He was a prolific contributor to the Napoleon Series. It is indeed a great loss.
