According to the French government site "memoires des hommes" Henri Carrion d'Espagne...etc is "capitaine en second" of the 1er cie de cheval of the gensdarmes d'ordonnance. Does this mean he led the company? This officer was a fellow student with Napoleon and was therefore a favourite and trusted bodyguard. He was also a thirty-nine year old with a history of several military and a government posts. I cannot find another officer of this rank in the 1er cie of the gensdarmes and therefore am concluding he was commander on secondment rather than second captain (i.e. deputy to the captain of the unit). Carrion lost two horses in battle in 1807.
The first lieutenants of the compagnie are de Scharbonniere (Charbonniere) and de Pitat. Both received the Legion d'Honneur in this campaign.
I have Honore Berret as chef d'escadron. I asume Berret was leading both companies as a half-squadron?
As indicated in Saint Hilaire, it is because Général de Brigade de Montmorency-Laval was both 'captain' of the 1st company and commander of the Gendarmes d'Ordonnance
Berret was major of the corps
