"This book attempts a broad-brush study of the development of a particular kind of police functionary and policing institution..."
The study of the French Gendarmerie during the Revolutionary and Napoleonic period is usually either overlooked or neglected. Found somewhat wanting as an institution by Napoleon when he assumed power in late 1799, the organization was completely rebuilt and became a disciplined, respected force across France and the Empire. While a national police organization, it was a paramilitary force that was used to police France and the Empire and also took its place with the field armies and, when necessary, the line of battle. Respected and feared, it was an efficient, well-trained organization that has never received its due.
