Sorry if I appear to be harassing you, for I don't mean to. I wonder if you've had opportunity to take a look at the muster rolls of the 1/40th yet? I'm writing an article on a number of local men who served during the period and it would be nice to obtain more certain information about Benjamin Ball's service - if possible. All I have at the moment is a letter from his sister which provides no more information than I've shared here already.
By the way, do you know from which militia battalion your ancestor enlisted? Was he a Somerset man?
Paul, thanks for asking the question and David, thanks for answering it!
I'm looking for one Cpl/Sgt Benjamin Ball of the 1/40th, last heard of with the regiment in Portugal in November 1810. Without access to the pay lists or muster rolls it's proven to be an impossible task to trace him, but perhaps the Lancs museum link will solve my problem. Ball was a Bristol man, and, of course, in 1810 the regiment was the 2nd Somersets!
ill have a look at some of the copies of musters. My ancestor was killed on the 19th march 1812 with the 40th. He enlisted from the militia in 1807, so i have a few copies of musters to look at. i will get back to you
Hello again Paul
Sorry if I appear to be harassing you, for I don't mean to. I wonder if you've had opportunity to take a look at the muster rolls of the 1/40th yet? All I have at the moment is a letter from his sister which provides no more information than I've shared here already.
By the way, do you know from which militia battalion your ancestor enlisted? Was he a Somerset man?
Thanks in anticipation.
That's very kind of you Paul, thank you.
