The bases also make them pretty useless as doorstops. The one on your link has a solid base which will bring some weight with it. Mine site on hollow bases. I suspect they're purely ornamental. Fun, though.
Hello Tom, Thanks for fowarding that. If I'd been more diligent at researching before I posted the pictures, I could have said that they're representations of the Duke of Wellington. And I think they were unpainted when in their original state. If so, then the images in your link are probably no more accurate than my badly done examples. And they're a little dark to tell the colour of the sash and shirt. They were sold to me as door stops, although I've seen them advertised as andirons for a fireplace (but I'm not convinced). I gave them to my wife for her birthday. She wasn't as pleased as I'd hoped she'd be!

The base is different. Do you think they were door stops?
