a difficult question, one criteria for me, it must be contemporary or near contemporary, so artists of choice from my side would be Albrecht Adam or Kobell - but the what of those great paintings they created?
Officier de chasseurs à cheval de la garde impériale chargeant, by Theodore Gericault (1812) seems to me to epitomise the other face of the era in contrast to the Goya. There are of course others.
@tomholmberg It is. War is a young man's game and too many don't survive. And that is a great shame and a great loss to the families and their nations.
I'll throw my hat into the ring in favour of Lady Butler's 'The 28th Regiment at Quatre Bras' - as wonderful depiction of the multitude of emotions that individuals experience in combat, it speaks to me far more than many other, admirable pieces of art. That said, I'm no art critic, so stylisticly people may want to pick holes in that argument.
There myriad great paintings of the period including some recent ones that are exceptional. Detaille, Meissonier, Rocco and many others can fit the category and it's a matter of taste and preference.
Perhaps the question should have been 'What is your favorite painting of the Napoleonic Wars?'
One of mine is The Evening of Jena which is now in the Invalides. Another is Tribute to Caesar.
As with all things, these questions are subjective and designed to generate a discussion - after all, it opens the discussion about what exactly makes a 'great' painting (which is part of the point of the thread).
or showing one of my heroes
I love paintings like this
To show at least something contemporary - amongst else a Washington.
I'm still learning how to post pictures here.
Or was it a cruel and tragic Age?
Speaking of the Napoleonic Age the picture must include the man. Next was it a glorious Age

I have a soft spot for the painting by Johann Baptist Seele of the battle of the Teufelsbrücke. Very dramatic in all aspects.

Now we have to wait for the next greatest painting, I suspect???
