Grand Artilleurs by Maurice Girod de l'Ain
This is an excellent volume, much of it primary source material, on three of the great artillerymen, in an army full of great artillerymen, of the First Empire.
Antoine Drouot fought at Trafalgar, was selected by Napoleon to form the regiment of Artillerie a Pied of the Imperial Guard in 1808 and fought at Wagram, participated in the Russian campaign, fought in Saxony in 1813, distinguishing himself at Hanau, and remained loyal to his Emperor joining him for the campaign in Belgium in 1815. He was dubbed 'the Sage of the Grande Armee' because of his deep intelligence and read his Bible every day. He was promoted to general of division in 1813 and was an imperial aide-de-camp. 'He disapproved always of the Emperor, but remained faithful'-Georges Six.
Alexander-Antoine Hureau Senarmont commanded the artillery of Victor's I Corps at Friedland in June 1807. His aggressive tactics there, maneuvering his artillery within 120 yards of the Russian center, destroyed Bagration's formation with point-blank artillery fire for twenty-five minutes, defeated the Russian Guard cavalry that tried to overrun his position, and initiated new artillery tactics that would be employed by French artillery commanders on other fields, such as Ocana, Wagram, Lutzen, Ligny, and Waterloo. His new tactics revolutionized artillery employment and established the artillery as the third combat arm, equal to the infantry and cavalry. He was killed in action at the siege of Cadiz in Spain in 1810
Jean Baptiste Eble was described as 'having the appearance of an ancient Roman' and Bernadotte said of him the he 'was a man out of Plutarch.' And excellent trainer and organizer, as well as a strict disciplinarian. He was a general of division in 1808 and was appointed as the Minister of War in the new kingdom of Westphalia in 1808 and 'created the Westphalian army.' He commanded the pontonnier units in Russia in 1812 and built the Berezina bridges to get the Grande Armee out of Russia. He died of exhaustion at the end of the retreat.
This volume is highly recommended.
