a bit depressing there the gunner with the ramrod is on the wrong side of the gun barrel. Also I wonder where those ear clutching is to be found in the drill regulations.
True, according to the regulations the gunner with the rammer/sponge should stand on the right side of the gun. So, how to assess what we see in the background of this portrait, dated 1814? Clearly, the gunner stands on the left of the gun. Artistic license or not? Would Monsieur le chef de bataillon have ordered the crew to re-exercise? At any rate, he seems not to have complained to the artist ... 😁
