The Young Guard Cavalry units of the Old Guard Cavalry did not carry eagles, could they carry other étendards - remains speculation, did such exist, there are a few known like for Grenadiers à Cheval or Mameluckes.
According the Souvenirs of Lt. Chevalier the Eagle of the Chasseurs à Cheval de la Garde Imériale - the pole carrying it was gilded and not painted blue as usually, this is in the book by Charrié, p. 181, as well as other details.
... NAPOLÉON.”“MINISTRY ORDER OF THE EMPEROR Mainz, July 27, 1813. As soon as each regiment of Guard of Honor has 3 squadrons, it will be advisable to send it its standard. ... NAPOLEON.”However, there to have been no survival or records of Porte Étendards to carry them. Likewise the 1815 2nd Chasseurs à Cheval, it was stated that it was intended for them to have a standard, but no personnel was ever on the roll, so it casts doubt it was ever done.
In a letter to Maréchal Duc D’Istrie 10 Arch 1812 Napoleon writes“Les grenadiers à cheval n'auront qu'une aigle. “ “The mounted grenadiers will have only one eagle. The light horse regiments will not have eagles.”Hollander quotes “L’Almanach imperial de 1813” with three classes (extract of cavalry only)“Corps à aigle Gredadiers à Cheval, quatre aigles; Mamelukes, une aigle; Les deuce régiment de lanciers, chacun une aigle. Corps sans drapeau ni étendard.”No cavalry unit mentioned without any.Hope this helps?
Quoted in O Hollander ‘Nos Drapeaux eg Étendards De 1812 a 1815’ Paris 1902.My rough translation”“No one should have an eagle unless he receives it from the Emperor. All other bodies must carry a flag. Only you can do this work, one per infantry regiment; one per cavalry regiment. Any cavalry that does not have 500 men will not be able to have an eagle.”A decree from des Tuileries on Christmas Day that year upped the requirement to 600 horses or more.So if the spirit of this letter was adhered to, squadrons raised by existing regiments regarded as Young Guard but part of the parent unit would have no more right to an Eagle than any other, i.e. none. If whole regiments were raised it would be theoretically possible, but only by the Emperor’s own gift, not as of right.I’ll continue the search to see if I’ve got any specific mention.
