Hello everyone,
I wanted to post my research on the 3e Ligne before the Battle of Thann on 19 April 1809. This was going to be part of my thesis for my master's in military history, but instead, I decided to get my master's in education to teach. Below you will find the most updated officers, ages, and wounds received on 19 April 1809. I also added men who were awarded a Legion d'honneur. There is no easy way to get an actual picture of who served in what company right at the battle, but using multiple documents from the XB.347, 2YB 120, YB 641, I feel I have recorded the most accurate list below. I left as many military terms in French as possible.
Sadly, Louis Joseph Uzes is the only officer I could not find the age for because he just had joined the regiment in late 1808 from the Velites de la Garde. He was killed only months later, so the regiment barely recorded any information about him. You will notice I put a few asterisks next to two names. The first is Sous-Lieut. Jean-Joseph Jeandel, who was severely wounded at the battle. He was detached from the 4e Bat, but only later in May is he officially put into the three main war battalions. However, this slot was left vacant due to Dominique Minvielle taking the post as Adj.major of the 3e Bat. The second is the 3e Voltigeur Capit. Jean Pierre Hugues (49), whose retirement was signed on 19 April 1809 in the 3e Ligne's depot in Strasbourg. However, the rolls only later in May show Capit. Jacques François Boichot as commanding the company. Most likely, Capit. Boichot (40) took command of the company earlier as his replacement Capit. Martin Joseph Thomas (51), detached from the 4e Bat, seems to be an old officer who joined in 1808 from the 14e Legere. He had started his career as a private in l'Isle de France Colonial Regiment in 1774! Even in his advanced age, he would be wounded at the Battle of Wagram on July 5th.
