I'm currently revisiting data from some morning states for the Anglo-Portuguese in the Peninsula that I transcribed well over a decade ago when I was working on my PhD; unfortunately, I've managed to misplace the reference for where I transcribed them from, and I never ended up following them up for my thesis so it's no good looking there. It was definitely TNA at Kew, and I have found an old email to my then-supervisor which indicates that they were from the WO1 series. I am hoping that this might ring a bell with someone.
The states are for the following dates:
1811 - 23 July, 25 August, 28 September, 13 October, 22 November, 7 December
1812 - 22 January, 24 February, 13 March, 31 May, 24 June, 12 July, 27 August, 24 September, 23 October, 29 November, 6 December
1813 - 31 January, 28 February, 28 march, 25 April, 30 may, 29 June, 16 July, 22 August, 24 September, 29 October, 25 November, 30 December
Does this sound familiar to anyone?
Hi Andrew, I looked at morning and weekly states for Wellington's army around the time of Salamanca as part of a successful effort to discern casualty rates among drummers (most casualty figures don't list them separately). These were in WO1/255, https://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/details/r/C2489180
and are also quoted by Rory Muir in his Salamanca book. I expect they are part of a series giving comparable info over a longer time frame.
However, the dates of the returns I photographed (8 July, 15 July 1812; 25 July report of Salamanca casualties) don't line up with the dates you mention in the post above.
Aloha Andrew!
I am not sure what you are asking for. Are looking for the monthly report for each battalion that was required to be submitted on the 24th of each month or something else? I have never seen a daily report and did not realize they existed.
The following is a listing of the monthly theatre reports held at Kew.
WO17/2464 (1808-1809) Returns are for 1st of the month, until that of July 1809 which is for 25th. Also contains order-of-battle and sickness data. Final order-of-battle for Moore’s army included, with 3rd KGL H. unattached within cavalry division, and Downman’s Troop attached to Stewart’s brigade and Evelyn’s to Slade’s. Contains breakdown of all detachments left in Portugal as of Feb 1809, including breakdown of battalions of dets by rank and component unit.
WO17/2465 (1810) Includes force at Cadiz, initially listed in with main body; from June filing under a separate return and then not there at all from mid-summer. From June a separate form is used to record officers and NCOs/rank-and-file, and totals given thereafter for army are R&F only.
WO17/2466 (Portugal, 1810-1812) As in, the Army of the Kingdom of Portugal. Beresford’s records as C-in-C. Infantry Cavalry, Militia and Artillery strengths and deployments.
WO17/2467 (1811, Jan-June)
WO17/2468 (1811, July-Dec)
WO17/2469 (1812, Jan-June)
WO17/2470 (1812, July-Dec)
WO17/2471 (1813, Jan-March)
WO17/2472 (1813, April-June)
WO17/2473 (1813, July-Sept) Now includes breakdown of the army by brigades and divisions, but for British only. Even Portuguese units in the British in Light Division are omitted. Breakdowns of unit composition, showing which of rank-and-file have enlisted for life and which for limited service.
WO17/2474 (1813, Oct-Dec)
WO17/2475 (1814, Jan-March)
WO17/2476 (April 1814-Feb 1815)
WO17/2478 (Eastern Coast) Begins April 1813 and runs through April 1814. Forces successively under Murray, Bentinck and Clinton.
WO17/2814 contains listings by month of effectives, deaths, discharges and desertions, divided between foreign and British units for all stations. For parts of 1810, Cadiz forces are listed separately, for 1811, 1812, 1813 and 1814 they are entirely separate. From 1813, Eastern Coast of Spain is listed separately also; figures for troops at Alicante in 1812 are included in that year’s listings for Sicily and the Ionian Islands.
Anything in bold I have copies of.
Anything in italics I will copies of by the end of the month.
