In mid-February, Wellington commenced offensive operations and one of the first combats was at Garris on 15 February. Here, General Harispe decided to defend a high ridge called the Motte de Garris.
I have been trying to determine the location of this ridge. Was it west of Garris or to the east between Garris and Saint Palais? Oman does not say and I can not find it on Google maps.
Thanks!
Bob
Thanks!
I think that we can add some other positions.
The position of the small french cavalry brigade at Beyrie (approximately where the world MAP is present on my map).
We can also add that the brigade Paris was located "au midi de Saint-Palais" at the south of Saint-Palais (according to Desboeufs souvenirs) on the road between Saint-Palais and St-Jean-Pied-de-Port (and Napier Peninsular War too).
François -
It was just what I was looking for. Thanks!
Bob
Coming from Helette by Saint-Martin-d'Arberoue, Harispe established its troops at Garris, with cavalry at Beyrie (now Beyrie-sur-Joyeuse just at the south of Garris). He was followed by Hill.
At the North-West of Garris there were the troops of the division Villatte. Harispe stay at the Left at Garris.
Between Garris and Beyrie, the position of Garris is "protected" by the presence of wooden hills from south west to south east.
Garris is at an altitude of approximately 120 m while the plain of the village of Luxe Sumberraute from where should come general Hill is at an altitude of approximately 40-55 m.
So i think that the position of Harispe was at the west of Garris, on top of the ridge up to the stream Soubiaga that make the frontier between Garris and Luxe-Sumberraute.
Look at the drawing that i made according to Geoportail for the altitude together with various other maps.
Hope this helps
François
